Imperial College London

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College offers world-class research, HFQ forming technique with knowhow (The inventor of the HFQ process), and development facilities for metal forming, materials processing and characterisation. Specific to the requirements of the current proposal, Imperial can provide access to the newly installed Gleeble (3800) Materials Simulator and Instron material testing machines, DIC (digital image correlation) system for strain visualization; 25 and 100 tonne hydraulic presses (forming speed range: 0 – 5 m/s) for sheet metal forming, lab-scale heating facilities, a variety of tools for formability testing at a range of temperatures, instrumented hardness testing machines, SEM/TEM and AFM. The Department at Imperial was ranked 1st of all mechanical engineering departments at UK universities in the most recent research assessment exercise.
